There is much more information about the motors lower down this page but
here are Torqeedo's recommended retail prices, updated December 2011:
Note - Torqeedo make frequent modifications to their products.
All motors supplied by us will be brand new and the very latest version,
unless we advise you otherwise. For example during 2011 the 1003 motor
was upgraded to a 520Wh battery (from 400Wh) and there were changes
to the transom clamp design. Some companies may still have old stock.
Popular options include:
- Longer Tiller £29. So you can sit further forward in boats that are sensitive to fore/aft trim (eg canoes).
- Remote Throttle £169 (picture). For use on craft with their own rudders (eg sailing dinghies) the 503 and 1003 can be locked in the straight ahead position, and tiller removed, and used with optional remote throttle. This includes a digital display similar to that built into the tiller, and controls both speed and direction (ie forward/reverse).
- Additional/Spare Batteries. Either capacity battery can be used on either motor; additional batteries available at £429 for the 320Wh version supplied with 503, or £499 for the 520Wh version (which is much better value on a cost per Wh calculation).
Battery Life
The battery supplied with the 2011 year model 1003 is 520 Watt hours
(ie 17.5 amp hours at 29.6 volts); whilst the 503 has a 325 Watt hour
capacity (ie 10 amp hours at 29.6 volts). This means you will get approx
30 minutes running the 1003 flat-out, or 35 minutes running the 503
flat-out. Equally if you run the 1003 at half-power (ie same output/boat
speed as the 503 flat-out) it should last an hour, because of the higher
capacity battery.
Another way to put it is that both engines consume the same power at
the same speed - but the 1003 has a higher potential top end.
As a real world example you should be able to drive our 14ft Trio at 3-4
knots for 2.5-3 hours, using the larger capacity battery. Being realistic
that is often all that many people really want or use their boats for -
an hour or so each way, stopping at the pub for lunch etc. Or you might
be planning to sail/row some of the distance...
A popular option is to take two batteries and only ever use one to go the
first half of the journey - then you'll always know there is enough to get
back again (assuming you didn't have very strong wind/tides with you on
the outward journey).
As battery life is usually the main worry for those new to electric power,
the digital display is very reassuring, if nothing else. Range is inversely
related to speed, so if you have further to go than currently indicated,
simply slow down until the range increases to the required distance.
As a further precaution an alarm sounds as you pass below 30%
capacity, with the display flashing a recommendation to slow down.
THEY'RE WATERPROOF... Perfect for use on a dayboat or dinghy - even if you capsize whilst sailing the motor will still work afterwards, to get you home (when you're cold and and wet and have had enough!). And with the battery taken off (approx 4kg, can be stored anywhere convenient) what's left is lighter than any petrol outboard on the market today (about 9kg), so will have less effect on your boat's fore/aft trim.

TORQEEDO SOLAR PANEL From a surface area of about 1.3m², the flexible, folding solar panel will charge the batteries of the Travel 503/1003 quicker than the mains! If you connect it while running the motor, you can achieve between 1.0 and 2.2 knots from the panel alone (depending on boat). |

Handling/Storage
The 1003 and 503 are designed with easy-to-remove battery and tiller,
making handling much easier. For example the 1003 weighs approx 30-lb
in total, of which 10-lb is the battery, so you only ever need to manhandle
20-lb (less than any petrol motor on the market today) at once. Also,
unlike modern (four stroke) petrol motors, you don't have to worry about
laying them down on one particular side, or even about getting them wet,
which makes storage straightforward too.
Not to mention the relative silence, ease of use, lack of pollution, not
spilling petrol everywhere...
